Swinburne Senior Secondary College, a co-educational government secondary school for young adults in years 11 and 12, is a coeducational, government secondary college. More like uni. It’s less like school.
They don’t wear a uniform, and they don’t care about the colour of someone’s hair. They trust their students to get to class on time. Many young people visit them to learn about their world-class visual and performing arts, design, technology, and humanities programs. Others want to advance in mathematics, science, and commerce. No matter what their passions, they have access to 38 VCE subjects and VCAL at senior and intermediate levels. There are also a wide range of VET certificate courses available, 16 of which are taught at the school. The classes are spread over four days, with Wednesday being the only day that students can access classrooms to do tasks, study for exams, talk to teachers, or take VET subjects.
They are determined to end discrimination and disadvantage. This is a place where every young adult can succeed, regardless of their gender, race, sexuality, or other life circumstances. Young adults don’t need to pretend to be somebody they are not. Students at Swinburne Senior Secondary College come from all parts of Greater Metropolitan Melbourne, as well as from Catholic, independent, and government secondary schools. They have around 420 students enrolled from 130 feeder schools.
Many schools emphasize the importance of education and value-based learning. They live it. They provide safe, flexible and personal learning environments that allow students to reach their full potential.
They do things differently at Swinburne Senior Secondary College. Their goal is for their young adults to be ready to face the real world. They place great emphasis on respect, responsibility, and commitment.
These schools are for young people who want a wide range of subjects, an adult-like learning environment, and a fresh start. They don’t follow many school rules. They live by their values. Everyday.
They have been around since 1913 and have archive photos of serious student faces to show it. They began focusing their efforts on seniors who felt unat home at traditional schools in 1993.
They are now able to teach relevant courses in an open, university-style environment. They don’t compromise academic rigour. They have attracted highly motivated and enthusiastic teachers and support staff, who never want to leave. Their flexible approach to teaching allows them to teach a variety of subjects designed around students.
They are proud to be open to all forms of diversity and inclusion. Their school is a place where young people learn and work together in a collegial and non-competitive environment. Their young adults are encouraged to be creative, academic, and personal leaders. They want their students to be involved in college life and reach the goals they have set.
