The Life and Legacy of Mr Bruce Rutherford
Bruce Rutherford was born in 1926, the youngest son of Kyabram orchidists James Rutherford and Annie Rutherford. But the work on the soil for Bruce was the means to an end and not his primary goal. In 1940, at the age of 14, Bruce began his training as a watchmaker in the country of Victoria. It was at FC John’s of Kyabram that Bruce was first introduced to what would eventually become an unstoppable passion.
In the 1950’s, Bruce purchased a tractor in the idea of earning some money and later sell to establish an own company. The year 1952 was when he realized his dream and opened the doors to his first jewellery company situated in Yarrawonga, Victoria.
Since 1966 Bruce worked for two years for Sotheby’s located in Bond Street, London before becoming Sotheby’s exclusive representative to Australia in 1966, a position that he held for a total of 10 years. One of his career highlights was the inaugural Australian auction, which was the property of Sir William Dobell at the recently completed Sydney Opera House.
In the same time, while working as a representative of Sotheby’s He also established his own company at 43 Bourke Street in Melbourne. In 1979 he made an adventurous step by opening a store located at the 120 Collins Street. This was the place where Bruce Rutherford really began to establish himself as a brand.
When the year was 1988 Wesley became a partner in his dad’s business was primarily focused on fine silver and jewellery. In the early 1990’s, the company was operating out of multiple shops on Collins Street eventually making 182 Collins Street home.
In 1993 the daughter of Bruce Ruth joined the company as they opened their second store located at the number 174 Collins Street. The family founded the first specialist store for pearls in Melbourne. Ruth quit the business in the year 2017, but she is still active in events from time to time.
In his professional life, Bruce was a part of all the members of his family. Some for short periods of time, while others for a long time with more significant positions. Bruce was very fond of his family and greatly enhanced the satisfaction of his work along with his family.
In the last few years, the majority children of the family have worked with the business in a wide spectrum of positions. This has always brought him great happiness.
Rutherford Today
Today in Rutherford the administration for the stores of four is managed by Wesley along with the granddaughter Bronwyn Burnett.
Wesley Rutherford is the company’s Director of Operations and, with an extensive management and business background He brings vision and determination to Rutherford. Bronwyn Burnett, Bruce Rutherford’s daughter and a gemologist who has more than 15 years of expertise in fine jewelry. She also is responsible for the training of staff.
Alan Houghton, Bruce’s son in law, has for many years been in charge of the company’s website and technology.
