In the years between 1943, and 1944 residents from Rathmines Road, when confronted by the lack of kindergarten education within the Hawthorn region for her daughter, put together a petition with more than 1,000 names to hand an appeal to Hawthorn City Council as well as her request that a kindergarten be set up within the Rathmines Reserve.
The Council responded to this request with the requirement that if this was to be approved, the concerned residents must raise 2 000 pounds. Festivals took place throughout Rathmines in addition to Victoria Road Reserves alive with spinning wheels, merry-go round, stands, as well as pipe and brass bands. Film screenings, ballet nights and jam-making workshops and apron-making, with stalls offering all kinds of baked goods gathered from their wartime food rations, were organized by these brave families in order to raise not just the amount requested by the Council however, they also raised more!
