Baskin-Robbins® also holds the title of being the largest chain of ice cream specialty shops in the world. Baskin-Robbins® produces and sells excellent, inventive ice cream as well as specialty frozen desserts and beverages. The company’s over 7,300 retail outlets may be found in nearly 50 countries around the world. Baskin-Robbins® was established in 1945 by two people who were passionate about ice cream. As a result of their interest, the company now offers more than one thousand ice cream flavors and a wide array of other delectable delicacies. Baskin-Robbins® is a member of the family of businesses owned by Dunkin’ Brands Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: DNKN), which has its headquarters in Canton, Massachusetts.
Their history
A little over two-thirds of a century ago, two brothers-in-law had a dream of opening a ground-breaking ice cream shop that would also serve as a community center for families living in the surrounding area. The founders of Baskin-Robbins, Burton “Burt” Baskin and Irvine “Irv” Robbins, shared a passion for traditional ice cream and the aspiration to offer customers an array of flavors that were created using ingredients of the highest possible quality, all while maintaining a lighthearted and welcoming atmosphere.
Irv began his working career when he was a teenager in the ice cream shop that his father owned. Burt served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy during World War II, and in his spare time, he made ice cream for his fellow service members. After the war was finished, the two business owners were keen to profit on the love of ice cream that was prevalent in the United States.
They followed the counsel of Irv’s father and began their careers in separate businesses. Irv founded Snowbird Ice Cream in the year 1945 in the city of Glendale, California. His shop offered ice cream of the highest quality and had 21 different flavors. Customers could enjoy themselves in a lively and friendly environment. A year later, Burt founded an ice cream shop called Burton’s in the city of Pasadena in the state of California. By 1948, the two of them owned a total of six businesses. Baskin-Robbins® was developed from this original idea throughout time.
Burt and Irv realized that as the number of stores rose, in order to uphold the high standards that they had established in the beginning, it would be necessary for each store to have a manager who had an ownership interest in the overall running of the business. In spite of the fact that the two founders were unaware of it at the time, they were actually the industry’s first people to introduce the notion of franchising to the market.
When Burt and Irv bought their first dairy in Burbank in 1949, there were already more than 40 establishments in the Southern California area. Because of this strategic move, they were able to have full control over the manufacturing of their ice cream as well as the creation of new flavor combinations and components.
The ice cream chain, which had previously operated under the names Snowbird and Burton’s, changed its name to Baskin-Robbins® in 1953. Carson/Roberts, a local advertising agency, recommended using the name Baskin-Robbins® 31 Ice Cream in order to maintain a consistent identity and image. Their suggestions included the use of the “31®” logo to represent a different flavor for each day of the month, Cherry (pink) and Chocolate (brown) polka dots to be reminiscent of clowns, carnivals, and fun, and finally, the use of cartoons to bring their flavors to life with personality and graphically highlight the name and delicious ingredients. All of these suggestions were implemented. Baskin-Robbins’® signature pink spoons were designed with the idea that customers should be able to try any of their many flavors free of charge. This overarching branding was done with the premise that people should be able to try any of their varieties.
At the Los Angeles County Fair in 1954, Baskin-Robbins® put their product to the test by entering it in competition with those of its rivals. In that year, they won their first Gold Medal and established a trend for participation in county and state fairs. Ever since then, they have received Gold Medals for Baskin-Robbins® Ice Cream at each and every competition they have entered.
“Not everyone likes all our flavors, but each flavor is someone’s favorite.”
— Irv Robbins
The Baskin-Robbins® brand kept growing, and by the middle of the 1960s, the company had become an ice cream empire with over 400 locations across the United States. The decade of the 1970s saw the beginning of the chain’s expansion into international markets, with the opening of stores in Japan, Saudi Arabia, Korea, and Australia.
Baskin-Robbins® is still operating under the franchise model that was initially developed by Burt and Irv many decades ago. The Baskin-Robbins® corporate office is responsible for the creation of new products and managing the store’s inventory, despite the fact that all Baskin-Robbins® locations are independently owned and operated franchises. This strategy to running a small business that emphasizes hands-on work gives franchisees the opportunity to establish a solid foothold in local communities all over the world. They continue to meet the needs of more than 150 million clients all around the world by utilizing this franchise business model. The ice cream delights they offer are unique and of great quality. And as a direct consequence of this, Baskin-Robbins® has expanded to become the largest chain of ice cream specialty stores in the world, with over 2,800 sites spread across the United States and over 5,800 locations spread across the rest of the world.
Since 1945, they have presented more than one thousand one-of-a-kind, entertaining, and delectable ice cream flavors. Their original, best-selling flavors, such as Pralines ‘n Cream and Mint Chocolate Chip, continue to provide happiness to millions of people all over the world. Still, they make it a point to consistently introduce new and exciting flavor combinations, in addition to industry-leading innovations such as hand-packed ice cream quarts, a one-of-a-kind flavor ribbon technique, the use of traditional dessert ingredients, and the introduction of ice creams with a mousse-like texture. Their dedication to developing innovative and exciting new goods is unrivaled in the market, as seen by the introduction of their iconic ice cream cakes and the expansion of their line of beverages, which now includes their famous Cappuccino Blast®. It is all a part of their objective to make the Baskin-Robbins® neighborhood a delicious and entertaining environment for their patrons, so they are doing all of these things.
“In the moments of greatest pride, Baskin-Robbins® is composed of those who contribute in a special way to our fellow humans—helping to nourish that quality of childlike enjoyment, which is perhaps the most precious and hopeful part of our humanity.”
— Warren H. Schmidt, Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Business at the University of California, Los Angeles.
