Auburn Primary School
A beloved place, “Auburn” has a long history of serving the community. It also holds a bright future.
The Auburn State School No. 2948 opened its doors on April 8, 1889 in a rented building on Queens Ave. It is located about one kilometre away from the present school grounds.
A portion of the site at Rathmines Road was bought a few months later, in June 1889. Work began on the new school. It opened with 402 students on October 14, 1890. The first building, which fronts Rathmines Road, was the two-story structure that houses their year 3- to 6-year-old students.
After six years, six hundred students and their staff were squeezed into six classrooms, a second building was built in the same style on October 10, 1913. It is currently home to their Foundation students as well as the Visual Arts room.
Auburn Primary School was established in 1971. A school hall was built on the same site as the Auburn Hall.
The Victorian Heritage Register (VHR 1707) was established in 1998. It included the main building, the infant school, the gazebo, and two shelter buildings.
In 2011, a new building was built to house Year 1 and 2. To enhance the open-plan, or “flexible learning space” philosophy, all other classrooms were renovated between 2012 and 2014. During this period, a new office was built, and Auburn Hall was also constructed.
Auburn Primary School has approximately 450 students and is experiencing strong enrolment. The school is zoned to limit access to the community.
The school has had all areas renovated. This includes the old bike shed, which was converted into a Science and Kitchen area. It also supports the school’s gardening program.
Both the Senior and Junior yards have play areas, as well sports areas for students. The school’s kitchen garden and chicken house are very popular with students. The Auburn community still values the old and treasures it, even though new buildings can give off a feeling of renewal.
Auburn Primary School is a caring, friendly school. Their motto is “Learn from the past, connect to the present, Create your future”. This slogan acknowledges the importance of their history and recognizes the need to provide students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in today’s rapidly changing world.
They provide a balanced, comprehensive learning program and are committed to creating a safe and caring environment for all students. Auburn’s strong sense of community is made possible by the active participation of parents in the learning process.
